When we drink lots of water, our bodies feel better and we have more energy. When we don’t drink enough water, we can become “dehydrated.” That means our bodies do not have enough water. People can get really sick if they get dehydrated!
Here are some ways people know if they are not getting enough water (dehydration), especially during the summer:
- they are extremely thirsty for hours at a time
- their mouth feels dry, and their lips are so dry they may crack a little
- they feel kind of tired or confused, maybe even dizzy
In Des Moines during the summer, we have 90- and even 100-degree weather. That means we need to drink even more water to stay healthy!
If you play a summer sport like softball or baseball, you may want to drink a sports drink once in a while. They have “electrolytes” (ee-LEK-troh-lites) that help when you are really, really active.
Try not to drink a lot of pop, especially during the summer. Some of them have caffeine. That can actually make us feel more dehydrated!
